Faulty update triggers global IT outage
Last week, a misconfigured update to CrowdStrike’s Falcon security software caused a global IT meltdown, affecting millions of Microsoft Windows devices. The faulty update led to widespread system crashes and the notorious Blue Screens of Death (BSOD), severely disrupting business operations. Experts believe the update skipped essential quality checks, introducing flawed code that was not properly tested before release.
Critical Sectors Disrupted
The outage caused chaos across critical sectors: over 10,000 flights were grounded globally, public transit systems in major U.S. cities stalled, and healthcare appointments along with 911 services were severely disrupted. Financial institutions faced online banking failures, while media outlets experienced broadcasting interruptions. The financial impact is staggering, with the top 500 U.S. companies facing an estimated $5.4 billion in losses, only partially covered by insurance.
Stock Drop and Analyst Concerns
CrowdStrike’s stock fell 11% on the day of the outage and has since declined by nearly 25%. While analysts largely expect the company to rebound from the incident, there are concerns about potential legal challenges and the impact on securing new contracts. Consequently, some analyst firms have lowered their price targets for the stock.
Valutico’s View
Valutico’s recent analysis suggests that CrowdStrike is overvalued. The discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation indicates USD 22 billion, whereas Trading Comparables suggest a valuation range of USD 30-32 billion. Despite the recent stock decline, the company continues to trade at substantially higher valuation multiples compared to peers like Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, and Zscaler.

What’s next for Crowdstrike?
Despite CrowdStrike’s active resolution of the issue, many organizations continue to recover from the disruption caused by this brief lapse. While CrowdStrike is set to see revenue and profit growth in the coming years, it is important to monitor whether its growth forecasts will be hampered in the aftermath of this incident.
