Strong digital ecosystem

Mercado Libre, founded in 1999, is a leading Latin American e-commerce marketplace. Its ecosystem includes not only an online marketplace but also extends to digital payments via ‘Mercado Pago’, logistics through ‘Mercado Envios’, and a robust credit business. Operating in top markets like Mexico and Brazil, Mercado Libre is central to the region’s digital commerce.

Stellar quarter

The Q2 earnings results for MercadoLibre exceeded analyst expectations, showing substantial growth across various business segments. Highlights include a 20% increase in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) for its e-commerce platform, over 50% growth in its credit portfolio, and Mercado Pago reaching 50 million monthly active users.

Market Leader Emerges

Following the Company’s impressive quarterly results, the market responded favorably with a surge of over 10% in a day and over 18% till now. This substantial gain has propelled the Company past Petrobras, establishing it as the largest company by market capitalization in the Latin American market.

Venture into Banking

MercadoLibre is seeking a banking license for ‘Mercado Pago’ to become Mexico’s largest digital bank. The platform will formalize its financial service offerings such as savings accounts, credit options, and payment solutions, leveraging its existing infrastructure to expand financial access.

Valutico’s View

A preliminary analysis suggests that MercadoLibre might be overvalued relative to its intrinsic value. While growth stocks often trade at higher multiples, the following analysis of price/earnings to growth ratios of its closest competitors indicates overvaluation.

The current market capitalization of USD 96 billion likely reflects optimism surrounding MercadoLibre’s strong fintech expansion in Latin America. Despite the recent surge, several analyst firms have further raised their target prices for the company, driven by strong Q2 results and improving profit margins.

Future Growth and Risks

The Company has substantial growth potential in Latin America’s 650 million-strong market across commerce and fintech. However, it faces risks from intense competition with Alibaba and Amazon, economic challenges like high inflation in Argentina, and political and regulatory uncertainties in South America.
